This section
will take a look at the subject of Breast Cancer. Other topics
that contain information for women can be found further down the
page.
One
woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her
lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed
with breast cancer and 400 will die this year. If detected early,
the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%.
It
is the second most fatal cancer in women (after lung cancer),
and the number of cases has significantly increased since the
1970s.
Breast
cancer is the illness that many women fear most, though they're
more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than they are of
all forms of cancer combined. Still, breast cancer is second only
to lung cancer as a cause of cancer deaths in American women.
Breast
cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor that starts from cells
of the breast. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men can
get breast cancer too.
Cancer
is a group of diseases in which cells in the body grow, change,
and multiply out of control. Usually, cancer is
named after the body part in which it originated; thus,
breast cancer refers to the erratic growth and proliferation of
cells that originate in the breast tissue.
There
are several types of breast cancer, but most occur in the breast
ducts or lobes. The chance of getting breast cancer increases
with age; women over 60 are especially at risk. Regular breast
self-examination & mammography are important for early detection.
For
women in the United States, the most common type
of cancer is breast cancer. In addition to mammography, other
tests may be ordered as part of a screening or prevention strategy,
especially in women who are at increased risk of developing breast
cancer.
All
women, regardless of their age, should practise breast awareness. The key to finding breast cancer
is early detection, and the key to early detection is a regular
screening mammogram, along with a clinical breast exam by a doctor
or nurse.
