This section
will take a look at the subject of Breast Pain. Other topics that
contain information for women can be found further down the page.
Breast
pain is a common problem in younger women who are still having
periods (menstrual cycles). Breast changes are common. From the
time a girl begins to develop breasts and begins menstruating
and throughout life, women may experience various kinds of breast pain and other breast changes.
Breast
pain alone is rarely a presenting symptom of cancer, and
imaging studies should be reserved for use in women who fall within usual screening
guidelines.
The
medical term for breast pain is mastalgia.
It can occur in a regular pattern over time when it is
called "cyclical" mastalgia
or in no particular pattern when it is called "non-cyclical"
mastalgia.
A
detailed analysis by questionnaire of breast pain in 460 newly referred
patients at a specialized breast clinic revealed that only 1.5%
of patients with pain had an early breast cancer. Breast
pain is a common breast symptom. The reason for breast
pain is not clearly understood, and is not usually associated with
breast cancer. Breast pain is sometimes associated with hormonal
variations and is then called cyclical
breast pain.
A
surprisingly high percentage of "breast pain" is actually
due to the chest wall arthritis, muscle overuse, or muscle strain.
The cause of most breast pain is poorly understood,
but appears to be due to an increased sensitivity of the breast
tissue to normal levels of hormones.
Noncyclical
pain may come from the breast or may come from somewhere else,
such as nearby muscles or joints, and may be felt in the breast. Pain can range from minor discomfort
to severely incapacitating pain in some cases.
