Sexually
transmitted diseases,
commonly called STDs, are diseases that are spread by having sex with someone who has an STD.
Sexually
transmitted diseases (previously termed venereal disease
or VD) are serious infections of the reproductive organs acquired
during sexual contact.
Sexually
transmitted diseases can pose major health problems so it is important
to be informed about STDs such chlamidia
gonorrhoea, HIV/AIDS, trichomoniasis,
syphilis, genital warts, Non-Specific Urethritis
and more.
In
particular, sexually
transmitted diseases in women often cause the serious condition
of pelvic inflammatory disease.
Sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs) have a significant health and
economic impact on the US
population.
Approximately
two million pregnant women are affected by sexually
transmitted diseases or STDs during each year in
the United States.
Pregnancy offers no protection against sexually transmitted diseases
leaving pregnant women vulnerable to the same STDs as women who
are not pregnant.
Prior
to the invention of modern medicines, sexually transmitted diseases were
generally incurable, and treatment was limited to treating the
symptoms of the disease.
Babies
born to women with sexually transmitted diseases may suffer death
or severe damage as a result of the mother's STD.
Cervical cancer is almost always caused by an STD called the human
pappilloma virus or HPV.
Condoms
are one of the best ways for people who are sexually active to
help avoid sexually
transmitted diseases (also known as sexually transmitted
infections) as well as help prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
Non-specific
urethritis, as with all forms of sexually
transmitted diseases, is on the increase. STDs occur most
commonly in sexually active teenagers and young adults, especially
those with multiple sex partners. Many sexually
transmitted diseases are highly contagious. Teenagers are
particularly susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases or
STDs. Gonorrhea is a sexually
transmitted disease involving infection of columnar and
transitional epithelium by Neisseria
gonorrhoeae.
Human
papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually
transmitted disease that can cause genital warts called
condylomas.
Sexually
transmitted diseases are so common that it is not an exaggeration
to say that most people who regularly have sex outside of marriage
will contract a sexually
transmitted disease.
The
term STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) is now commonly used in the place of STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease).
A sexually transmitted
disease that if left untreated can cause heart and brain
damage, paralysis, blindness and possibly death.
Other
diseases that may be sexually transmitted
include trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis,
cytomegalovirus infections, scabies, and pubic lice. STDs in pregnant
women are associated with a number of adverse outcomes, including
spontaneous abortion and infection in the newborn.
